Tangled hair is a curly hair kid’s worst nightmare! Brushing can cause the frizzies, breakage and could have long term damaging effects on the hair. It can be annoying to say the least, but fear not: When there’s a will, there’s a way! With the right curly hair products and patience, you can detangle your child’s hair without causing any damage and here’s how:
Use a Kids Shampoo for Curly Hair
What causes knots in hair? It happens when the outer layer of your child’s hair, the cuticle, becomes damaged and opens up. A healthy cuticle is smooth and closed. Damaged cuticles, i.e the open layers become snagged on each other, resulting in tangled hair. The more damaged the cuticle is, the worse the tangles.
A damaged cuticle is caused by any of these factors:
1. Heat from either heat tools, like blow dryers, straighteners, etc., or excessive sun exposure which can have the same damaging effect. Be sure to protect your child’s hair and avoid potential tangles by wearing a hat or bandana when outside for a long period of time.
2. Lack of moisture in your child’s curly hair. Dry hair can weaken your strands and increase split ends as well as tangled hair.
3. Not washing your hair properly. Using harsh shampoos daily with parabens and sulfates can strip the natural oils in children’s hair, which can lead to damage. Instead, don’t wash your child’s hair everyday and use a gentle, natural shampoo free of sulfates and parabens
4. Using your towel vigorously to dry your child’s hair is a big no-no. Instead, pat their hair dry or squeeze out excess moisture by using an old t-shirt is an old celebrity trick or you can also allow it to air dry.
Using a kids shampoo for curly hair, like Fairy Tales Hair Care’s Tangle Tamer
collection which includes a detangling shampoo
, and detangler spray
helps to smooth out damaged cuticles for tangle-free hair. Rich ingredients such as quinoa, avocado butter work together to nourish and hydrate curls from within.
Use a Wide Tooth Comb
As hinted by their name, wide tooth combs have thicker teeth to allow larger amounts of hair through. They should be a preferred choice for children with thick, curly, or tangled hair and it’s perfect to use on damp or wet hair to minimize breakage. A great tip for curly hair is to add detangler in the bath and/or shower and comb through with your wide tooth comb and then rinse out the conditioner.
For best results, use a detangling spray
, like Fairy Tale’s Hair Care’s Static Free Detangling Spray, before brushing to gently loosen tangles and unruly knots to make combing curly hair a breeze.
Rinse Hair with Cold Water
You don’t need to have a full shower or bath in ice-cold water! That would just be painful! You can bathe in warm water, and in fact, it’s encouraged to use warm water at the start because warm water allows the cuticles of the hair and pores of the scalp to open up which helps remove any dirt, residue, or buildup. But you should use cold water when rinsing out the conditioner from your hair because cold water closes the cuticles and pores in the scalp. This allows moisture to stay locked in those curls and prevent frizzy, tangled hair.
