Prom season. Growing up and letting go…a little

June is one of my favorite months of the year. The flowers in the yard are in full bloom, the grass is so green and smells delish and yes, school is over! Yay May! ☀️ Getting ready for Summer!

Happy May! I am so happy it’s warm weather time and I could finally put my winter coat away! I bought a white coat and every single winter day I regretted that decision. I thought I was being different, and it would send a, “hey I’m an upbeat, energetic person” vibe. But alas, it did not. Read more...

March madness. Welcome spring 🌼

Happy March! I’m hoping by the time this is published the snow here in NJ will be melted and there is just a little bit of green somewhere in my backyard. I love March and not just because my delicious daughter will be 15 on March 27, though that is reason enough. I love March because it means Spring is on its way! Read more...

Where’s the love lately?

As Valentines Day approaches and we reflect on those we love, I can’t help but think about how harsh our world is today. I adore my family and I will shout it from the rooftops but if someone cuts in front of me at Starbucks, I just don’t feel the need to post it for the world to see. Read more...

Reasons Why I Love Summer ☀️

I love summer for different reasons. I love the green grass, the beautiful flowers and the 7 weeks that my kids go off to camp. Don’t judge, they’re just as happy as I am; maybe more so. Camp is the time when my kids leave their phones behind and they don’t even miss them! Read more...

Family time is all I need this Mother’s Day

Mother's Day Blog Post

I am celebrating my 16th Mother's Day. I was 36 when Jack was born (go on, do the math) and I thought I knew exactly what I was getting myself into. Not sure why I thought that since I had never changed a diaper or fed a baby but nevertheless, I thought I was more than prepared. Read more...

Isn't it funny how you reach a certain age and you stop thinking the world revolves around you? I'll be honest, it probably took me longer than most (see stand-up comedy career) but the more requests we receive for help here at Fairy Tales, the more I want to get out there and do something! We love finding organizations to pair with and this year we helped support Girls on the Run and the Good+ Foundation. Read more...

What Being a Mom Means to Me

Bitmoji Bigger Flowers

Since becoming a Mom, I love Mother's Day almost as much as my birthday!

Birthdays are all about you and that's pretty awesome but Mother's Day is a collective holiday that celebrates Moms.

I ❤️ Fairy Tales!

Bitmoji Flowers

Valentine's Day is always a mixed bag of emotions for me. I remember the first time I hated this pseudo-holiday: February 14th, 1981. I also remember the first time I loved this holiday: February 14th, 1999.

Lice Invasion Part Deux

Kids In Class

Happy New Year! We hope everyone had a lovely holiday and a very happy new year's celebration. Or if you're like me, you had a good long rest!

Now it's back to school time or as I like to call it; Lice Invasion Part Deux. It's true!

Resolution Regrets

Bitmoji Champagne

New Year's resolutions always seemed ridiculous to me. Never one to put too much pressure on myself, I figured if I haven't worked on the resolution during the year, it couldn't have been that important to me. So each year, I just say NO.

Let’s talk Super Lice.

Bitmoji Counseling

The media is at it again, talking about these little buggers and their new super genetic DNA. The study, presented in August 2015 at the American Chemical Society meeting, states that, of the 109 populations of head lice collected in 30 states, 95% (104 populations) contained lice that have the resistant gene.

Kids At School

It's inevitable, the carefree summer time is over and parents everywhere are gearing up for back to school. Here are a few quick tips to ease us back into the routine with a smile.

Boo! Don’t share that!!!

Bitmoji Halloween

I have a confession, I have always hated Halloween. Don't get me wrong, I like the candy part but it was the dressing up I always found odd. I think it harkens back to my parents telling me that I am perfect just the way I am and I actually believed them. So, why pretend to be someone else?

School’s Out For Summer!

Friends And Family

Is there a better song that so vividly captures a feeling?

Don't you wish, just once more, you could hear that final bell ring and know that you have two, long months of summer all to yourself? Now, when the bell rings parents must go into overdrive. At least this is the way it is for most families, right?

Hey Mom, Did You Miss Fashion Week?

Every winter, fashionistas descend on NYC and strut the runway in clothes that fit well...

On a hanger. Trends launch from the fashion editors’ desks, but what impact do these trends have on us, regular moms? I'm going out on a limb to say… absolutely nothing.

To My Mother on Mother’s Day

It's time to thank my Mom for molding me into the crazy person I am.

Each day that I manage to keep our business running, the children fed and dressed, the dog walked, food on the table and do a quick stop and wave to my husband on the staircase, I thank my Mom for making me strong, independent and wonderfully comfortable in my own, kooky skin.

Moving Can Be Hair Raising – Keep it Smooth!

Clothes On The Bed

We've all had our share of Hair Raising adventures, both good and bad.

I am certainly no exception to the rule. This year has been one full of events that have left me in a whirlwind. Most recently I went through two stressful moves.

What… Is it January Again Already?

Climbing Rocks

It's that time of year again – you know what I mean – New Year's Resolutions!

Personally, I’m not a big fan. At my age, I’ve earned the right to say “meh” to any big, life altering changes. I’ve come to understand that I need to like myself just as I am. Now, don't get me wrong, every January 1st I say, "I'm on a diet." However, when I have ice cream on January 2nd I don't beat myself up about it.

Celebrate What Really Matters this Holiday Season

Risa And Her Son

December is the perfect time to reflect on the past year, to be thankful for all we have and to give back to a cause that resonates within us.

Let me share what I am most thankful for this holiday season. I hope you will join me in giving back to a cause so near and dear to my family.

We Can’t Do Everything

Risa In A Laundry Basket With Wine And Her Computer

Running a business, caring for my family and staying relatively sane are enough for me. The arrival of the holiday season can begin to feel like a race to Hades if I am not careful with my yes responses. In years past, I have said yes too much and then ended the year exhausted and kinda crazy. Not this year. I am committed to saying no - or else I might be committed. To begin with, I ruled out Black Friday shopping. I said no to the crowds and the chaos. Instead I opted to shop Cyber Monday sales from the comfort of my home, a glass of wine in hand. I especially love the stores that extend Cyber Monday all weekend- great excuse to sit at home and not even comb your hair!. Read more...

I Love Fall…

Cars Backpack

Don’t Fear the Lice Letter

I love the leaves changing color and the crisp, clean air. I love wearing boots and sweaters. With fall comes one thing I don’t love…that dreaded letter from the school nurse. You know the letter, the one that throws us into a tizzy, interrupts our daily schedules, stops afterschool play dates and inevitably signals the time to switch from Rosé to Merlot. And I’m not talking the 23rd letter referencing lunches, back to school night, school pictures, sports schedules, reading lists or the dreaded Yankee Candle fundraiser.

Let’s Talk About Mutant Super Lice…

Risa And Lice

Are Mutant Super Lice Invading our Kids Heads?

For the last few weeks, the media has been saturated with articles claiming the emergence of mutant super lice! These super lice have been found to be resistant to pyrethroid, the active ingredient in most over-the-counter lice treatments. This according to new research presented at the American Chemical Society’s national meeting. (

Summer Camp Essentials

In The Pool

Children’s hair can be a real problem over the summer.

Let’s face can ours. Sun mixed with pool and lake water can damage the hair, stripping it of oils and nutrients. Outbreaks of lice remain prevalent, as kids are in close proximity to one another, sharing sporting equipment, combs, towels, etc.

Venture Outdoors & Keep the Bugs Away

Spring will eventually be here to stay, I am told.
I’m beginning to doubt Mother Nature. We’re not too close, she and I.

I’ll be honest… I’m not much of a nature buff. I could lie and say I happily wake each morning to the songs of birds. I immediately and joyfully leap out of bed and dance down our sunlit stairs. I slip on my well-worn sneakers and venture out for a run on the morning dew-lined streets, beaming and grateful to be alive.

This is not my morning fairy tale–never was, never will be.

Spring Break/Hitting the Road or Hunkering Down

Family Vacation

Remember when Spring Break meant parties, beaches and bikinis?

We all have college memories–albeit blurry—of wild nights on the beaches or the slopes. I am probably not alone when I say, I’m grateful I made it through those vacations in one piece. The fact that I survived Spring Break 1988 is a freakin’ miracle! Let’s leave it at that!

Snow Day / Storming the Castle

Family Snow

We all have seen our kid’s excitement when they wake up to a blanket of white snow, begging for the announcement—Snow Day!

For kids, Snow Day means no school, all day play and non-stop hot chocolate charged fun. But for us, Snow Day means something else and sometimes our “day off” can get a little complicated.
