School’s Out For Summer!
Is there a better song that so vividly captures a feeling? Don't you wish, just once more, you could hear that final bell ring and know that you have two, long months of summer all to yourself? Now, when the bell rings parents must go into overdrive. At least this is the way it is for most families, right? My parents were different. They got rid of us kids for 8 weeks each summer. Off we went to summer camp in June and to this day, I still have no idea what my parents did while we were away. Frankly, back then I couldn't have cared less. For me, sleep-away camp was the greatest two months of the year! Each day was carefully planned, from flagpole lineups to nightly Taps. We got to sleep with our besties, attempting to stay up all night telling secrets, eating Quik and peanut butter with a spoon, and laughing at everything… and sometimes nothing at all. My camp friends and I grew up together – we met as kids, bonded as tweens and helped each other survive our teenage years. We learned about life from one another. There was no Google, there was just Elise showing us all how to kiss a boy. There was no ESPN, we had Sue trying to teach us to hit a softball. We learned to square dance, roller-skate and write actual letters (SWAK). We learned about crushes and we held each other through heartbreaks (JG!). Away at summer camp, we learned how to have good friends and how to be a good friend. I cherish my camp friends and our fun memories. No matter how much time has passed, my fellow CTH'ers and I still speak our own language. It takes us right back to a sacred place that was innocent, powerful and magical – created in just 8 short weeks a year.
