Family time is all I need this Mother’s Day
I am celebrating my 16th Mother's Day. I was 36 when Jack was born (go on, do the math) and I thought I knew exactly what I was getting myself into. Not sure why I thought that since I had never changed a diaper or fed a baby but nevertheless, I thought I was more than prepared. There really is nothing that prepares you nor is there any book or class that can teach you what to do. And you do make mistakes, many of them – you will say the wrong thing, do the wrong thing, forget a ton of things, yell about nothing, yell about everything and thru it all you will love these little people with a fierceness you never knew you had in you.
Until they become teenagers! I think if someone offered me a good price, I might just sell Jack. I’m kidding of course, but what the heck happened and why did it happen so fast?? I’d give anything for just one more minute with that little boy who always held my hand, who just wanted to play with trains and sleep cuddled next to me. In the blink of an eye, he now towers over me and he shaves!
And now, Ava (14) is just about taller than me. I didn’t think this would bother me, but it is unnerving to have your children taller than you! I feel like in some ways I lost the power. I didn’t of course, lets be honest, I still feed, clothe and educate them but I feel like the dynamics are really shifting in our house. Rob and I feel like we live with adults now. Spending meaningful time together is an effort and usually comes with bargaining, eye rolling and a cash payout (kidding on that last one!).
So, this Mother’s Day I am giving myself a present. The 4 of us are going to Italy. 10 days of some serious togetherness! Since I know I can’t turn back time, I’m going to look towards the future and make sure our family works at this new chapter. We are going to spend lots of time together, talking and enjoying the grownups we have ALL now become.
Happy Mother's Day!!
