While it can be more difficult for a young boy to have the patience or ambition to take care of his wavy hair regularly, he may as well start to develop the habit at a young age. In this article, you will learn about common curly hair mistakes and how you can prevent them.
1. Over-Washing
-Mistake: Using too much shampoo.
-Why It’s a Problem: Shampoo removes natural hair oils, leaving it dry and frizzy.
-Solution: Limit shampooing to 2-3 times a week. During the other days, just rinse with water or use a conditioner to help your hair maintain moisture.
2. Using the Wrong Products
-Mistake: Using products that contain drying alcohols or heavy silicones.
-Why It's a Problem: These ingredients can strip hair and/or make it greasy or limp.
3. Neglecting Moisture
-Mistake: Not properly moisturizing with ingredients that nourish a child’s hair.
-Why It's a Problem: The drier the hair, the more likely it is to become brittle and experience frizz.
-Solution: Integrate deep conditioner or a hair mask into your curly or wavy hair routine. Purchase a shower filter to remove the chlorine or other harsh chemicals and minerals in tap water that might contribute to further drying out your hair. Always finalize your wash with a cold rinse to close those cuticles.
4. Improper Drying Techniques
-Mistake: Harsh rubbing of hair with a towel.
-Why It's a Problem: Leads to breakage and frizz.
-Solution: Pat hair dry with a towel in place of rubbing it. Use a microfiber towel or an old shirt that has satin or cotton blend to decrease the friction.
5. Skipping Heat Protection
-Mistake: Blow-drying hair without using a heat protectant.
-Why It's a Problem: Blasting your hair with direct heat can make the hair more fragile leading to breakage or frizz.
-Solution: Never use the heat without a protectant or conditioning spray before blow-dry. Place the blow dryer no closer than six inches from your hair.
6. Ignoring Professional Advice
-Mistake: Not getting advice from a barber or hairdresser who is experienced with curly hair kids.
-Why It's a Problem: A Hair Pro can give you one-to-one advice and suggest products that are best suited for you.
7. Wrong Brushing or Combing Technique
-Mistake: Not using the right brush or comb for curly hair.
-Why It's a Problem: The wrong hair care tools or appliances can lead to breakage and actually make tangles worse.
-Solution: Comb through the hair with a wide-tooth comb or detangling brush starting at the ends and working your way up to the scalp while the hair is damp and conditioned to avoid breakage.
