How Changing Seasons Affect Kid’s Skin and Mood

Got a grumpy teen? The change in seasons could be affecting more than their mood!

The good news is it is possible to get your tween’s skin (and mood) on the right track despite the changes in temperature outdoors. Understanding how the change in seasons affects their skin and mood first will give you the insight you need to make a regular self care routine happen for them.

How Changing Seasons Affect Teen’s Skin

From warm to cold weather:

Like all other aspects of the body, the skin likes consistency too. So when temperatures and humidity levels change quickly, it takes a toll on our skin too. When the weather shifts from warm to cold, the humidity and temperatures drop rapidly, causing skin to try and adjust by working harder to maintain moisture and hydration levels. Cold weather will undoubtedly cause dry skin, tightness, and cracks in the outer skin layer all leading to inflammation and irritation. Let’s not forget about the hot showers and constant heat blasting indoors contributing to dryness and inflammation during the cold weather months. All of these factors bring out unwanted acne, inflammation and dryness for your teen.

From cold to warm weather:

When spring arrives and the weather begins to warm up again, your pre-teen’s skin has to adapt yet again. With warm air and humidity, skin may begin to feel greasy and weighed down. Oil tends to become trapped on the surface of the skin, leading to more breakouts and blackheads. Staying on top of these transitions is key to preventing unwanted skin irritation and pimples.

How Changing Seasons Affect Teen’s Mood

While a change in seasons doesn’t affect everyone in the same way – the change that happens to your mood for many is real. That’s why it’s super important to be aware of your teenager’s mental health during these transitional times. When the weather gets colder and the days get shorter, seasonal affective disorder (SAD) may sink in. You may signs in your teen including mood shifts, less energy, feeling less social, losing interest in favorite activities, having cravings for carbs and changes in sleep (either sleeping more or having trouble sleeping). Since our body is affected by the sunlight during the day (think circadian rhythm), it’s no wonder our mood can become disrupted if there’s less of the sun around.

On the other hand, with spring rolling in and summer on the horizon, you may see a little more pep in your tween’s step these days. Whether the cold weather days are still looming or warmer days have arrived, getting out in the sun (or even just looking out the window) can help boost mood instantly. If you notice your teen a bit more down than usual, encourage them to seek the sun and get outside too!
